Jefferson Barracks is one of our nation’s most awe inspiring national historic sites featuring the 1st American military post placed west of the Mississippi River (1826) and arguably the 1st Nationally designated military cemetery in 1827, it is now the final resting place for nearly a quarter million American veterans, the 6th most in the National Military Cemetery system, as well as the site of the 1st U.S. Army Infantry School.

  • In 1833, due to its role as the primary military protection for the rapidly expanding settlement of the new and incredibly vast national western frontier, it became the site for what was to become the 1st American cavalry regiment, the Regiment of Dragoons which either by that designation or by its designation as the 1st Cavalry Regiment, participated in virtually every conflict the American Military was involved in from the point of its creation, to the beginning of the 20th
  • Additionally, it was the first posting of new West Point Graduate U.S. Grant, who with his fellow junior officer and former West Point roommate, Frederick Dent, visited Fred’s family at nearby White Haven, where he met his wife to be Julia Dent Grant.

It’s grounds also encompass the Missouri Civil War Museum, the Jefferson Barracks POW/MIA Museum and the Jefferson Barracks Ordinance Museum.
